Summary

This unit establishes and develops the basics in algebra, starting with a well-paced recap of all necessary prior knowledge including algebraic notation, substitution and manipulation.  Solving linear equations including those with variables on both sides, brackets and more complicated expressions are tackled.  Students move on to expanding double brackets and factorising quadratic expressions, with an emphasis on a mastery approach and application of skills through reasoning problems.  Identities; understanding what they are and their use, is considered next.  Mathematical reasoning is used to show equivalence of expressions and ‘show that’ questions are developed with concepts being strongly supported through mathematical representations.  Algebraic problems are posed from geometric context and reasoning skills are developed to support the solving of such problems.
