Summary

This challenging algebra unit develops a range of techniques around graphs drawn on the coordinate axes along with extending students’ knowledge and understanding of vectors.  Gradients of perpendicular lines are tackled in the first lesson, leading to students finding equations of parallel and perpendicular lines which pass through a given point.  The equation of a tangent to a curve or circle is developed as an application of the learning from the first lesson.  Work on simultaneous equations from Unit 10 is built on through considering how to simultaneously solve a quadratic equation with a linear equation, both graphically and algebraically.  The use of graphs to give approximate solutions to equations is developed further in lesson 5 by investigating iteration to give approximate solutions.  The final lesson of this unit returns to work on vectors, developed from Unit 17, where problems are presented and solved, including performing geometrical proofs using vectors.
