Summary

This unit focuses on developing mastery in the concepts of probability.  Finding and using the probability of a single event is the focus of the first lesson; assigning probability values using fractions, decimals and percentages.  Students are encouraged to be systematic when listing outcomes of single or combined events and to use appropriate forms to display outcomes such as two-way tables. Procedural variation in questioning is used to good effect to underpin the learning.  Probability experiments are explored with relative frequencies calculated and compared to theoretical probabilities. Tree diagrams and Venn diagrams are used to model contexts and to find the probability of single and combined events, including successive events. The use of union and intersection notation is introduced and used.  The final lesson of the unit presents a range of contextualised problems to solve – encouraging students to select appropriate methods and to apply their understanding to develop mastery.
