Summary

This unit builds on Unit 11 to consider more sophisticated methods of displaying and analysing discrete, continuous and grouped data. The first lesson focuses on discrete data and the calculation of measures of central tendency and spread.  Methods for collecting and displaying grouped data are considered next, including frequency diagrams and polygons.  A range of averages are estimated from the grouped data and its graphs.  Lesson 3 explores cumulative frequency; calculating it, displaying it on a cumulative frequency graph, reading off key values from the graph and interpreting the data to describe a population.  Boxplots are used to display data on populations and make comparisons between data sets, including the consideration of outliers.  The unit moves on to consider grouped continuous data and the displaying of this with a histogram, using frequency density and understanding how to estimate the mean and median of the data from the graph. The final lesson of the unit poses a range of statistical problems to give students an opportunity to use deepen their understanding.
