Summary

This unit builds on the earlier algebra units, starting with a well-paced recap of necessary prior knowledge. Solving linear equations including those with variables on both sides, brackets and more complicated expressions are tackled. Students move on by expanding double brackets and factorising quadratic expressions, with an emphasis on a mastery approach and application of skills through reasoning problems. Identities; understanding what they are and using them is considered next. Mathematical reasoning is used to show equivalence of expressions and ‘show that’ questions are developed with concepts being strongly supported through mathematical representations. Algebraic problems are posed from geometric context and reasoning skills are developed to support the solving of such problems.
