Mathematics Mastery

Summary

This unit establishes the basics of collecting, manipulating and displaying data.  Well-illustrated and with an emphasis on clarity and deepening understanding, this unit provides an excellent basis for work on statistics, which is continued in Unit 16.  The unit starts by considering the variety of ways to display data with charts, tables and graphs. It then moves on to consider means to collect data; discrete, continuous and grouped and to select the best method of display.  Sampling and populations are considered, and the concept of bias explored.  Time-series graphs are constructed and interpreted including the consideration of trends. Stem and leaf diagrams are explored and used to respond in context including comparing two sets of data with back-to-back stem and leaf diagrams.  The unit concludes in its final two lessons by considering bi-variate data displayed on scatter graphs and examined for correlation.

What people say...

The worksheets are well written and the students seemed comfortable with the format. Some interesting questions too, which fit well with the new GCSE course.

The lessons are a fantastic starting point for non-specialists teaching maths for the first time. The material is covered, with conceptually sound explanations and probing questions embedded in those explanations.
