Summary

This final number unit in the series collects together number topics of surds, error bounds, fractional and negative indices and recurring decimals.  The first two lessons expand on earlier work on indices by developing the use of the index laws and the understanding and use of fractional and negative indices.  Recurring and terminating decimals are explored in lesson 3 and students convert a recurring decimal to a fraction.  Work on error intervals including specifying them due to rounding or truncation using inequality notation, leads on to defining and finding upper and lower bounds of approximated numbers. Students give answers to an appropriate degree of accuracy by consideration of bounds.  The final two lessons in the unit explore surds; their notation and the manipulation of them using the four rules.  Rationalising of a denominator involving a surd is dealt with in the final lesson.

What people say...

The resources were very good.

Open questions feature regularly so that students learn to see the possibilities in a question. This is essential for solving problems and tackling unfamiliar questions.
