These resources cover the aspects related to the use of encryption to protect data and the principles for the effective design of secure information systems, which are part of Learning Aim A4 of the specification. The resources are subdivided in four topics plus an end-of-unit assessment. Each topic includes enough content for one or two lessons. The resources contain examples and practical activities to support the teaching and learning of the key concepts related to encryption and its uses, and to the principles of secure systems design. 

The first topic introduces common uses of encryption to protect both stored data and communications, giving students the opportunity to link concepts to their applications in the real world. The second topic focuses on how encryption is implemented, providing the necessary technical knowledge to support a deeper understanding of the key concepts.  

The vulnerabilities of Wi-Fi networks and the precautions that can be taken to protect them against unauthorised access are covered in the third and fourth topics, enabling students to appreciate the risks associated with the use of Wi-Fi networks and understand how such risks might be mitigated. The second part of the fourth topic looks at the principles that system developers should follow when designing information management systems, so that students fully understand how security is built into systems from the earliest stage of development.
