Summary

NEW for the 2025 AAQ specification.

These resources cover Learning Aim A of the specification and are subdivided into six topics plus an end-of-unit assessment. Each topic contains enough content for one to two lessons worth of material. The resources contain case studies and examples along with opportunities for students to use working sample databases that are provided.

Note that although much of the theory is covered conceptually, all practical database examples and database files make use of Microsoft Access.

The first topic considers the important concepts of relational databases and terminology. Topic 2 builds on this theory with consideration of various relational keys, relationships and integrity constraints.

Relational algebra is covered in topic 3. While all terms from the specification are covered, students are also taught those more commonly used within database software such as Microsoft Access.

In Topic 4, students learn how to manipulate data structures before exploring anomalies in the following topic. In topic 5, students also have a thorough look at the various normal forms and the rules for each. They are able to observe the different ways that data can be normalised in a variety of databases.

Finally, students consider how to research other databases that are relevant to a project brief. The different components of a project scoping document are given along with advice on the key features needed when producing such a document.

A final assessment is given for students to demonstrate their understanding of the topics before attempting the Pearson Set Assignment Brief.

These resources cover part A of the specification and are subdivided into six topics plus an end-of-unit assessment. Each topic contains enough content for one to two lessons of material.
