Summary

This focused four-topic pack takes students through the final stages of their database project: testing, usability, review and optimisation.

The pack opens with a thorough approach to testing referential integrity, functionality and individual Access objects. Working through a realistic school clubs scenario, students apply erroneous, boundary and normal test data and work systematically through tables, queries, forms, reports and navigation menus - building the test documentation their project requires.

Topic two addresses usability testing, an area that students often underestimate. They learn to select appropriate test users, devise specific and realistic tasks, and record observations accurately. Worked examples of recording tables show students exactly what good usability documentation looks like, before connecting findings to concrete improvements in their solution.

Topic three builds the skills needed to write a strong project review. It includes annotated examples to show students exactly how to move beyond generic descriptions to genuine evaluations with the use of specific evidence for judgements and alternative design decisions. The ability to incorporate quality, fitness for purpose, suitability against requirements, and legal and ethical constraints are all included.

The final topic addresses optimisation. Students explore how data type choices such as byte, integer and currency affect storage at scale, compare image storage strategies, and look at where joins and sub-queries add unnecessary complexity to queries. This helps students understand how to demonstrate reasoned, high-quality justification of their optimisation decisions.

A final assessment draws together all four topics, giving you a clear picture of how well students have understood the material before they move on to the PSAB with confidence.

These resources cover parts C2-C4 of the specification and are subdivided into four topics plus an end-of-unit assessment. Each topic contains enough content for one to two lessons of material.

What people say...

The individual homework and worksheets as well as the end of unit tests help me measure the progress my pupils are making in a better way. I am able to extract individual pupil gap analysis data that helps me know my pupils better.

Eliz Dadson. Head of Computer Science, Cranleigh Abu Dhabi

The books arrived today and they are all wonderful. I love them. The quality of the material and the size for revision is just perfect.
