The unit is subdivided into six topics, expected to be taught across roughly six weeks of lessons, plus a test, in order to fit with most school timetables. It is a theoretical unit covering the relevant sections of the AQA AS Level Computer Science specification. The unit is designed to allow AS students to be taught at the same time as students taking the full A Level.

The six topics in this unit cover sections 3.3 and 3.4 of the AQA AS Level specification 7516. Computational thinking, tackling logic problems, designing and testing algorithms are covered in a lively and practical way. The concepts of abstraction and automation are brought alive through interesting examples, and finite state machines are explained in simple terms, with plenty of practice examples throughout. Teachers new to these topics will find this unit an invaluable teaching aid.
