Summary

Each topic is designed for teaching over roughly 1-2 lessons.

In this free unit, the understanding of the term ‘pure’ is discussed in terms of a substance made of one chemical ‘entity’, and the measure of its purity using its melting point is a key focus of the first section of the topic.  A look at ‘formulations’ as mixtures that have carefully selected and measured components then follows, using numerous examples involving interesting and engaging contexts for students. Many will have already come across simple analytical techniques, for example, chromatography, but this unit dwells further on this particular technique in terms of an understanding of how the process works, and also aims to quantify the relative positions of substance spot and solvent front in terms of an Rf value.  A departure is then made into the analysis and identification of the key ions that are essential for students to know. The modern and highly powerful analytical technique of flame emission spectroscopy is also studied with particular attention given to how this technique is used to analyse complex mixtures.  With many experimental contexts and fascinating situations illustrated, this section then brings the unit to a colourful and engaging conclusion.

The complete series covers the AQA GCSE (9-1) Chemistry 8462 and combined science (Trilogy) 8464 specifications for Chemistry. Content relating to the separate Chemistry specification or Higher level material is indicated throughout for easy identification.

What's included in the toolkit?

Chemistry teaching toolkit

The GCSE units have been written to satisfy the specification for the separate Chemistry 8462 and Trilogy 8464 specification for the new AQA 9-1 GCSEs. Each unit contains:

  • PowerPoint slides for each topic
  • Detailed lesson plans
  • Learning objectives and outcomes
  • Worksheets and homework activities with answers
  • End-of-unit, exam-style assessment test with answers
  • Other material and links to online resources

What people say...

Professional looking resources that would enable consistency within the department and the use of worksheet and homework task that comprehensively covered the spec points.

Helen Webb. Science teacher, Lutterworth College

PG Online resources are very well planned and easy to use. Inspection copies are also useful as this enables me to make better choices with our limited budgets.
